Smokejumpers Celebrate Seventy Years of Parachuting to Wildfires

It was a hot afternoon that July 12, 1940 when Rufus Robinson and Earl Cooley took off from the dirt airstrip in Moose Creek, Idaho and flew west into the headwaters of Martin Creek, Nez Perce National Forest. Moments later they made history by making America's first parachute jumps for the purpose of suppressing a wildfire. Seven decades later the National Smokejumper Association will celebrate by hosting a three-day reunion in Redding, California, June 11-13 at the Redding Convention Center.

From across the nation smokejumpers will gather to share the extraordinary camaraderie, friendships and jump stories that define smokejumping. All current and former jumpers, pilots, associates, wildland firefighters and contractors are invited. Make your plans to attend now. If you haven't received an application from the National Association, go online to smokejumpers.com and click on the National Smokejumper Reunion 2010 icon. An application can be downloaded and printed from the site.

Registration will be June 11 at the Redding Convention Center from 1200-1700. A barbecue on the North Patio from 1700-0100 will follow. Saturday the 12th there will be a Golf Scramble, Fun Run/Walk plus self guided tours of the Turtle Bay Museum, Botanical Gardens and the Paul Bunyon Forest Camp, all just walking distance from the center. Tours will also be conducted at the Redding Smokejumper Base and Wildland Firefighter Memorial. At 1800 a no host bar will proceed a sit-down catered dinner, award presentations, speakers and a slide show of smokejumper history. Sunday, June 13, the festivities will conclude with a memorial brunch from 0900-1200. Both the dinner and brunch will be at the Convention Center.

For those wishing for extra time to visit and tell jump stories, an additional function is planned for Thursday, June 10, 2010 from 1700-? at the Red Lion Inn outdoor swimming pool. Not part of the regular program, this will be a no-host Beer, Buddies and BS deal with finger food available. Be sure to make this one if you're already in town. Redding has lots of local points of interest such as Shasta Dam, Whiskeytown Lake, Shasta Caverns and river rafting; a fun time for the whole family.

FREE PRESCRIPTION DRUG PLAN TO CONTINUE OFFERING THEIR SERVICE TO INDIVIDUAL PARTICIPANTS IN THE UNITED STATES AND PUERTO RICO.

The estimated 45 million uninsured Americans (and many more underinsured) can take advantage of this free, no questions asked prescription drug program to help cover the cost of ongoing treatments and occasional prescription drug needs.

May19, 2010 - Free Drug Card is expanding their business plan with the addition of a new and talented distributor, Loraine Roberson. "We hope to be able to reach out to the vast amount of people in this country that lack prescription drug coverage or are unhappy with their current plan," says Roberson. These free prescription cards offer discounts on cards that even rival the co-pay plans offered by many of the most popular insurance companies. By remaining a free and independent prescription drug savings provider rather than an insurance company, Free Drug Card can keep its prices low while avoiding the red tape.

The prescription drug cards offered by Roberson are easy to obtain and easy to use. You can print the card out at the website http://www.savemore4unow.com or have it sent to you through an email address, mailed to your residents, Organization or fax machine. After receiving the card, your plan is immediately active and ready to use. "We've had cases when participants have printed their card a mere five minutes before they were planning to go to the pharmacy," says Roberson "We strive to make this plan as simple to use and accessible as possible."

The discounts that the participant is eligible for vary by the pharmacy and the drugs required. On average, the savings are from 10% - 85%. The largest savings usually come with the purchase of generic prescription drugs but brand name drugs are also eligible for substantial discounts. Prescription drugs are not the only thing that the plan covers, however. We also have a discount card to use for Pets as well. You can go to website www.savemore4unow.com and print a prescription for people & pets.

The prescription drug cards can be used at over 80% participating pharmacies around the United States and Puerto Rico. Almost every major pharmaceutical chain accepts these free prescription cards including Rite Aid, Wal-mart, Target, Costco and Albertsons. When you bring the card to one of the participating pharmacies, you must simple present it to the representative and they will access your account to determine the savings for which you will be eligible.

One of the most exciting aspects of this program is the fact that it is available to anyone from the United States and Puerto Rico at absolutely no charge. There are no enrollment fees, no annual fees and no yearly fees. In addition to being immediately available to people that print out the card (or request one from Loraine Roberson via email, fax or postal mail), there is no expiration date once you receive the card. It can be shared with your family and friends without any complications.

For additional information about these free prescription cards, visit Roberson's website at:

Clark Hatch: Fitness Ambassador to Asia

In his new autobiography, successful fitness entrepreneur Clark Hatch tells how he expanded his first Tokyo gym into more than 120 state-of-the-art fitness centers in 14 Asian countries and around the world.

How was it that a young man from a Minnesota soybean farm, sent by the U.S. Army to Korea at age 18, ended up as the pioneer of fitness in the Orient, establishing more than 120 state-of-the-art fitness centers in 14 Asian countries, plus India, the Middle East and the USA? The adventures of Clark Hatch, after selling his car to open Tokyo's first physical fitness center in 1965, are enough to fill a book.

This is that book.

Blessed with rare athletic ability and physical strength, Clark parlayed his natural sports skills, positive personality and tireless determination into a winning business combination. His success in Tokyo led him, unexpectedly, to open the first fitness center in Seoul, Korea in 1972. Next was Hong Kong, another first. Then, as his name became known around the Far East, more firsts: Manila, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, which led to the heart of Communist China, Beijing. The rest is history.

Club Industry Magazine aptly called him "... a cross between Marco Polo and Jack LaLanne." Currently there are 41 Clark Hatch physical fitness centers in operation from Honolulu to Nepal. Now in retirement, Clark looks back at his odyssey and recalls how his innate desire to help people keep fit and healthy, close to a million people so far, led to his founding an international business dynasty.

Bill Pearl, former Mr. America and five-time Mr. Universe, says, "Clark Hatch remains one of the unsung progressive heroes of the industry and anyone fortunate to have been involved with him in his professional endeavors will certainly praise him as much as I."

His autobiography, Clark Hatch: Fitness Ambassador to Asia, is a classic Horatio Alger success story, a Far Eastern odyssey garnished with movie stars, gangsters and sumo wrestlers. For more on this remarkable, readable adventure visit www.createspace.com/3426988

Tom Torlakson and Gloria Romero Mislead Voters
On April 1st, Lydia Gutierrez, Candidate for State Superintendent of Schools, filed a formal complaint with the Chief Counsel of the California Secretary of State challenging her opponents' use of the designation ‘Teacher' and ‘Educator' to describe their professions. The California Elections Code requires a designation to be truthful and not misleading to the voters. Tom Torlakson's and Gloria Romero's declarations failed this test.
Excerpts:
• Mr. Torlakson's career for the past thirty years has been as a career politician on the Contra Costa Board of Supervisors and in the California State Legislature. Admittedly, he was a teacher in the 1970s, but this has not been his principal vocation for decades. Mr. Torlakson's designation as a "Teacher" is inappropriate and should be deleted.
• Mr. Torlakson's ballot statement should be modified to exclude all statements which state or imply that he is currently working as a teacher. In particular, Torlakson's opening statements "Teaching has been my life - and my - passion - for the past 37 years. As a classroom teacher..." should be removed as misleading. This statement gives the strong impression that teaching is primary career at present. Mr. Torlakson begins on sentence with the phrase "As a classroom teacher" and uses the present tense implying that he is a classroom teacher, when, in fact, he is not a classroom teacher and has not been a classroom teacher for decades.
• Gloria Romero's designation as an "Educator" should likewise be deleted. Ms. Romero has been a full time member of the California State Legislature since 1998. The ballot designation is factually inaccurate and misleading. Ms. Romero's designation as an "Educator" is therefore inappropriate and should be deleted.
• Gloria Romero's ballot statement should be modified to exclude all statements which state and imply that she is currently an "educator" or a "professor". In particular, Romero's statements that she is "...an Education Professor..." as well as the reference to her as "Professor Gloria Romero" should be removed. Ms. Romero may have taught some classes at a college at some point in time, but does not currently. In particular, the statement "...Professor Gloria Romero trains the teachers of the future..." is misleading and false because it is in the present tense.
Lydia Gutierrez, unlike some of her competition, is in fact currently employed as a full-time classroom teacher.
For the full text of the complaint, go to Lydiaforkids2010.com under Issues.
